Even though studies have shown mixed results regarding the benefits of Himalayan salt lamps, they are growing in popularity. You often see these lamps in spas and health stores, but many people are now adding them to their homes and work places as well.
Himalayan salt lamps are actually made out of real salt and TRUE Himalayan salt lamps are made from salt mined from the Himalayan Mountains. This salt is pink or orange in color due to the high mineral concentration found in the salt. Chunks of the salt are hand carved and hollowed out, to create a place for a light bulb that emits both light and heat.
Salt is hygroscopic, which means that it attracts water molecules to itself. These water molecules carry indoor pollutants like mold, dust, bacteria, and other allergens that are trapped in the salt, and the water vapor is released back into the air. Because of this Himalayan salt lamps are thought to help purify and clean the air, helping all of us to breathe easier, and being especially beneficial for those with chronic respiratory conditions.
Positive ions are damaging to our body’s cells and are thought to accelerate the aging process and increase risk for cancer, dementia, heart disease, and many other health conditions. Sources of positive ions include electromagnetic disturbances caused by cell phones, microwaves, TVs, radios, air conditioning systems, radar systems, and computers; exhaust fumes from cars, factory smoke, cigarette smoke, dust, and radiation are other sources of positive ions. Himalayan salt lamps release negative ions into the air, which can help balance out all of the positive ions we are surrounded by on a daily basis. Negative ions are believed to to produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of serotonin in our blood stream, which can help alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our mood and energy levels.
The soft, warm glow from the Himalayan salt lamp helps to create a relaxing environment and can help promote sleepiness at the end of a long day. Continued use of bright lights at the end of the day delays the production of melatonin in our body, which is the hormone that lets our body know it’s time to sleep. Studies have shown that placing a Himalayan salt lamp in your room can help get your body ready to power down and promote a restful night’s sleep.
I recently put a Himalayan salt lamp in my office and my living room and have been making it a habit to keep them on throughout the day. Do you have a Himalayan salt lamp at home? What do you think? Tell me below!
