There are a lot of trends in the health and fitness industry, but one I can say that I firmly believe in? Plant based. I know, I know… people who are vegan love to talk about being vegan, but hear me out. Did you know that research has proven that eating a plant based diet can decrease your risk of develop coronary artery disease, diabetes, and even cancer? Eating plant based also promotes glowing skin and good vision, along with promoting healthy gut flora and decreasing inflammation throughout your body. When you eat a diet made of plants, you pack your body full of important vitamins, minerals, fiber, and healthy fats that almost no one gets enough of eating a typical American diet. The antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables help fight harmful free radicals that can cause damage at the cellular level. Not only has research shown that eating plants is extremely beneficial, but they have also proven that eating meat is harmful to your health. First of all, processed meat is a carcinogen… that means it causes cancer. Studies in Germany and England showed that those who ate a vegetarian diet were 40% less likely to develop breast, prostate, and colon cancer! Meat and dairy products are packed with saturated fats and cholesterol, which have been proven to contribute to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, dementia, and cancer. Fish, dairy, and other meats are the top causes of food born disease and illness, like E. Coli and Salmonella. Not to mention, meat and dairy are full of hormones and antibiotics that are given to the animals while they are alive. Choosing to change to a plant based diet or lifestyle can be super intimidating, but I promise it’s not as hard as it appears! Start with something small, like buying almond milk instead of dairy milk. Pick out a new meat alternative at the store to try each week and add some variety to your usual grocery cart. Eating plant based has countless benefits to your body and your health, AND you also get the satisfaction of knowing that you are also doing a lot to help the environment and our planet!
